Really interesting post. I wonder if for most 'regular' people - by which I mean people not working in the industry - downloading porn gets rid of some of the shame of going into a sex shop to buy it. There's still a massive stigma about sex and what kinda stuff you're into. I mean they could buy from an online retailer, but I believe here in the UK true hardcore porn can only be bought from licensed sex shops. I dunno man, the internet and being able to download anything for free has made us impatient I reckon. Like why wait, when I could download it and 10 minutes later be watching it.
Thinking about this, you're in a unique position regarding this topic. It's a completely valid point, as well. I do know that as a consumer, I still go to the stores. I have a couple friends who work in the store where I live in CA now, and although it can sometimes be awkward, I prefer being able to physically get movies or toys. So, I'm not sure I'd worry about that.
But that wasn't really your point. I don't think it really, at least in your case, comes down to "Oh, it's free" - a lot of it seems situational, and also spur of the moment, if you get what I'm saying. However, you bring up an interesting point in your music analogy - if you were an established artist you would support up and comers. Maybe you could do that porn-wise as well. See if there's anyone that you're interested in or who is producing unique content that you don't know too much about about maybe contact them or something. I know it's not exactly the same with porn, but maybe something along those lines.
Well said! I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Being a sex educator for over a year now, I've gotten a lot of toys for free. So when there's something I really want that my store doesn't sell, I think "What, am I suppose to PAY for this vibrator?" But anyway, yeah, great article ;)
